At Cheriton, our broad and balanced curriculum is enhanced by a wide range of opportunities and experiences designed to nurture, develop and stretch pupils' talents and interests.
Extra-curricular clubs
We offer a wide range of extra curricular clubs, which are open to all. There's sure to be something to interest your child!
After School Clubs run daily from 3:30 - 4:30. These vary from free, teacher led clubs, to paid activities from outside providers.
In addition, our fantastic Y6 Play Leaders lead structured activities each lunch time.
Please see below for this term's selection.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Each term each class from KS1 onwards elects representatives to be their school council representatives. Re-electing termly means more children get the chance to participate!
- Representatives from year 6 work with out youngest children (EYFS) in school and provide a voice for them in meetings.
- The school council meets regularly with a member of SLT to discuss whole school issues and it allows the children’s voice to be heard. Topics can range from making decisions on the learning environment to deciding on elements of the curriculum.
- Our School Council host the weekly celebration assembly and
- They also run our weekly healthy tuck shop. They are responsible for budgeting, manages profits, and allocating funds from the money they have raised.

Every lunchtime, Year 6 Playleaders lead structured play activities. These include craft, loom bands, dodgeball, exploring and story time. The youngest children in school LOVE joining in!
Christmas Fair
The children in Beech did a fantastic job planning and running stalls for our Christmas Fair. With the support of the PTA they raised over £650!
Performances and Open Afternoons
As a school, we hold regular performance to parents, carers and the wider community. These include the annual Harvest Festival, Christingle, Nativity, Spring Concert and end of year Pantomime!
Each term we hold open afternoons. These usually have a curriculum focus and enable parents and carers to see the fantastic learning which has been going on during the term. There is also the opportunity to join in with some learning activities too!
Picture News
Every Wednesday the whole school joins together for our Picture News Assembly. Each week, we explore a current news story, through an image, a thought-provoking question and lots of discussion! We link this to our school values and British values. We also display these images on our display, making links to work in geography by considering 'where in the world' they are associated with.

Sporting Opportunities
Bikeability
Every year children in Year 5 have the opportunity to participate in their Level 2 and 3 Bikeability.
Scrum Kids
Every Thursday the children in Maple enjoy a fantastic session of fundamental movement skills with Jared, from Scrum Kids. This half term they have been climbing, balancing and jumping, making good use of the equipment we have in school.
Extra-Curricular Sports Clubs
At Cheriton Fitzpaine, we offer a range of extra-curricular sports clubs throughout the year - football, cricket, rugby and tennis are all regularly offered and well-attended.
An up to date list of the clubs on offer at school presently can be found in the Extra-Curricular Clubs section of this website. Extra Curricular Clubs
Competitive Sports
As well as our curricular and extra-curricular PE and school sports, we also endeavour to offer as many pupils as possible the opportunity to represent the school at sporting competitions and festivals. As a group, the Exe Valley Federation of schools regularly organise sporting fixtures and tournaments throughout the school year. We also attend a variety of sports festivals and tournaments organised by our local secondary school, Queen Elizabeth's School in Crediton.
Exmoor Challenge
As part of our Outdoor and Adventurous Activities learning, we offer our Year 6 children the chance to take part in the Exmoor Challenge each year. For the Exmoor Challenge, children work in teams of 4, and they have to follow a 16 mile route which is not marked - so following instructions, map-reading, and compass skills are essential. There are a series of check-points along the route and each leg has to be done in a pre-determined time - points are deducted if teams arrive too early or too late. We organise a range of practice walks in advance of the challenge and all Year 6 children take part in these whether they go on to take part in the full challenge or not.
Trips and Visits
Our curriculum is enhanced throughout the year by trips and visits which link to our learning. We like to make the most of our local environment and community, planning in trips within our locality, such as to St Matthew's Church or the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, as well as welcoming visitors with knowledge or talents to share!
Residentials
Each year, children in Years 3 - 6 have the option to participate in a residential visit with peers from across the Exe Valley Federation.
2022/2023
·Year 3 and 4 went to Bracken Tor YHA for one night.
Year 5 went to Bath and Bristol, visiting the Roman Baths, the SS Great Britain and The Wild Place Project, as well as watching ‘The King and I’ at the Hippodrome. We stayed at the YMCA in Bath. We were away for two nights.
Year 6 will be going to Heatree Activity Centre on Dartmoor for three nights. This will include a wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities!
Transition
One of the benefits of being in a federation is the opportunity for pupils to mix with a wider peer group than their school class. We plan opportunities throughout the year to engage with other children from the EVF schools, including Sports at LMLC, sporting tournaments, shared trips and transition events.
